The Occupational Safety and Health (Use and Standards of Exposure of Chemicals Hazardous to Health) Regulations 2000, or USECHH Regulations, requires the employer of any place of work to conduct a chemical health risk assessment (CHRA) at the workplace where chemicals hazardous to health are used, handled and stored.

The assessment is required when (1) a significant change in work unit related to assessment; (2) addition of new chemicals to existing CHRA report; and (3) more than 5 years has elapsed since las assessment.

The main goal for the assessment is to help employer in making the decision on appropriate control measures to be taken in order to protect the health of employees who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals. The objectives of the assessments are:
  • To identify the hazards posed by each chemical substance used, stored, handled or transported within the place of work
  • To evaluate the degree of exposure of employees to the hazardous chemicals through inhalation, skin contact, and/or ingestion
  • To evaluate the adequacy of existing control measures;
  • To conclude the significance of the health risk posed by the hazardous chemicals; and
  • To recommend further appropriate control measures to prevent or reduce such risks to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP)
